My City Centre [MCC] is located inside Masdar City, one of the world’s most sustainable urban communities and a low-carbon development. The new destination features 18,500 sq.m. of gross leasable area, including a 7,000 sq.m. Carrefour Hypermarket and dining options for Masdar City residents and surrounding communities. The mall’s 600 car parking bays are shaded by a roof, housing photovoltaic cells, generating electricity equivalent to one-fifth of the mall’s annual energy usage. Following the highest sustainability standards, MCC will stand out as a progressive hotspot in the city of Abu Dhabi and serve as the community's location of choice for their everyday shopping and lifestyle needs.
Masdar City, a global leading sustainable development, is designed and built to consume up to 40 per cent lower water and energy compared to an average building development in Abu Dhabi. This level of efficiency is only achievable through the use of high-performance thermal insulation. Moreover, each building must meet a minimum 3-Pearl rating according to the Estidama Pearl Building Rating System. Administered by the Abu Dhabi Department of Municipalities and Transport (DMT), a 3-Pearl Estidama rating is comparable to the LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) Gold international green building certification.
The Challenge:
MCC’s roof for the parking and traffic level required an insulation solution with high compressive strength of over 500 kPa to withstand the load of cars and delivery trucks.
Additionally, for the upper roof of the food-court area, high-efficiency thermal insulation comprising of Polyisocyanurate (PIR) was specified in conjunction with a waterproof membrane over the concrete deck. It was detailed to be rigid, thermoset, PIR insulation core faced on both sides with a low emissivity composite foils.
Under the Estidama specifications, all the insulation must be manufactured using a blowing agent free from CFCs and HCFCs, with zero Ozone Depletion Potential (ODP) and Global Warming Potential (GWP) ≤5.
Our solution:
To match the challenge, Kingspan GreenGuard GG500 was supplied to MCC’s parking and traffic level roof, featuring high-performance insulation with a fibre-free extruded polystyrene (XPS) core. It was installed in a 140 mm thickness, which helped to efficiently meet the Estidama U-value requirement of 0.221 W/m2K for the roofs.
Kingspan GreenGuard GG500 was also installed for roof insulation around the stairs and central areas of the first and second floors in 400 mm thickness which aided in achieving a better overall thermal performance of the building.
To meet the insulation needs of MCC's food-court area roof, Kingspan Therma TR26 was installed in 100 mm thickness, which helped to achieve the required level of thermal insulation for the project.
